Daniel MacDowell of Grants Pass was nominated for his heroic actions during a medical call involving a child experiencing an allergic reaction.
Daniel MacDowell, a firefighter and EMT with Rural Metro Fire in Josephine County, was recently named one of 33 Global Medical Response (GMR) Stars of Life. All honorees from across the country will be honored at the American Ambulance Association (AAA) Stars of Life Awards Ceremony, May 1-4 in Washington, D.C.

MacDowell was nominated for his heroic actions during a medical call involving a pediatric patient experiencing an allergic reaction. Thanks to MacDowell’s keen observation of the patient during the call and his clinical training, he was able to recognize the signs of anaphylaxis and administered a life-saving dose of epinephrine before the patient’s condition deteriorated.

“If it weren’t for Daniel recognizing the signs of anaphylaxis and acting quicky and with sound clinical judgment, this patient would have experienced a very different outcome,” said Austin Prince, Operations Chief for Rural Metro Fire. “For being a new EMT, his actions took a significant amount of courage and leadership. Daniel truly embodies the values and mission of Rural Metro Fire and Global Medical Response, and he is very much deserving of this honor.”

MacDowell expressed what an honor it is to receive this award, but that he feels his actions on this call were the result of excellent training and strong teamwork. “I am very honored to receive the Stars of Life Award,” he said. “Even though this call had its own unique variables, I reacted correctly because of the outstanding work of my clinical instructors and the assistance of my colleagues. I did my job, as many firefighters and emergency medical responders do every day. And I am grateful that the outcome was favorable.”
