Coming Soon: Hawaii Life Flight Expands Access to Critical Care Beginning in April
3.11.2026
Next month, Hawaii Life Flight will launch Kaua’i's first rotor-wing medical aircraft, providing the island’s residents with expanded emergency healthcare services.
Starting this April, Hawaii Life Flight will launch Kaua’i's first rotor-wing medical aircraft, providing the island’s residents with expanded emergency healthcare services.
On Kaua‘i, at times, reaching critical care can take several hours by ground—a delay that affects urgent outcomes. This new service will greatly improve access to lifesaving treatment. With the arrival of dedicated air medical support, both locals and visitors who need immediate care, whether on the island or at specialized facilities elsewhere, can count on fast, dependable emergency and critical care, no longer hindered by rural travel times. This major development tackles longstanding obstacles and offers the community vital healthcare exactly when it's needed most.
“This launch marks a turning point for Kaua‘i’s emergency medical response,” said Brent Lopez, regional director for Hawaii Life Flight. “Our new helicopter will not only reduce response times but also make advanced care—like trauma centers and cardiac cath labs—more accessible to everyone on the island. We’re proud to build on our partnership with local hospitals and to ensure no one’s health is compromised by geography or travel time.”
A Community-Driven Solution
Local hospitals and community partners identified the need for a rotor-wing resource to complement the island’s existing EMS system, and Hawaii Life Flight stepped forward to collaborate.
“This helicopter is being added because the community asked—and we listened,” said Lopez. “Our goal is always to reinforce, never replace, the existing system. This rotor service will be a complementary resource that supports local responders and expands the island’s care capabilities.”
Hawaii Life Flight, part of Global Medical Response (GMR), currently operates a medically equipped fixed-wing aircraft on the island and views this service expansion as part of its ongoing commitment to investing in the island’s healthcare system.
What This Means for Kaua’i
With the addition of a rotor-wing aircraft, Hawaii Life Flight will enhance capacity and reduce the need to pull resources away from 911 operations. The aircraft will help:
Hawaii Life Flight participates in the AirMedCare Network (AMCN), which offers membership options designed to eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for emergency air medical services when transported by one of their providers.
Membership covers all residents of a household for an annual fee of $99, or $79 for seniors. Members receive medically necessary air ambulance services, when flown and cared for by an AMCN provider, without incurring any additional costs beyond the membership fee.
“Given Kaua‘i’s unique landscape and the reality that reaching advanced medical care by road can be challenging—there are situations where air medical transport may be needed more often than in urban areas,” said Lopez. “Having an AMCN membership offers families added assurance that, when urgent medical transport is necessary, they can focus on getting the right care—whether on the island or elsewhere—without worrying about unexpected costs.”
Global Medical Response, Inc. utilizes its subsidiary REACH Air Medical Services LLC, a Part 135, certified air carrier, operating under FAA certificate # JBZA819S, to operate its rotor-wing aircraft in Hawaii under the name Hawaii Life Flight. REACH Air Medical Services LLC maintains operational control of the aircraft at all times.

With the addition of a rotor-wing aircraft, Hawaii Life Flight will enhance capacity and reduce the need to pull resources away from 911 operations. The aircraft will help:
- Reduce critical transport times by eliminating lengthy drive times to the airport or between hospitals
- Support interfacility transfers to Līhuʻe’s trauma centers, cardiac catheterization laboratories (cath labs), and specialty care on neighboring islands
- Increase availability of local EMS crews by shifting long-distance transports to the air medical team
- Connect patients to definitive care faster and more reliably, especially from remote or difficult-to-access areas
